Hi, Mike here!
Recent moments of self-reflection have inspired me to write and share aspects of mindset and self-development journey. I’ve come to realise that much of what I seek - memories to last a lifetime (for myself, and for others) - is encapsulated in these two words, “Peak Experiences”.
Peak experiences remind us that a life worth living, is not defined by length, but by quality.
Quality of life, simply being: “not merely to exist, but to feel alive” (in all senses of the word).
What is a Peak Experience?
In short, peak experiences are an altered state of consciousness that is often characterized by a feeling of euphoria and transcendence - feeling so fully alive in the moment that all else melts away.
The phrase “Peak Experience” is not something new, psychologist Abraham Maslow introduced his concept of peak experiences in 1943. I also believe that this concept has existed in some form or other, ever since humanity gained the ability of introspection and metacognition.
Nevertheless, while not a new idea, it is still worth pondering and reviewing as we take stock, now and then, of our lives and the sum of its parts.
For further reading, here are the 16 key aspects of peak experiences according to Abraham Maslow in his book, "Toward A Psychology of Being":
1. Sense of Unity of The Self
2. Oneness With The Environment
3. Experience of Peak Power
4. Non-Forcing
5. Self Determination
6. Free of Inhibition
7. Spontaneity
8. Purposeless Creativity
9. Timelessness
10. Pinnacle of Individuality
11. Merging of I and Other
12. Unmotivated by Needs
13. Artistic Expression
14. Sense of Completion
15. Playfulness
16. Surprise HappeningsMany of these aspects of peak experiences can be cultivated through daily rituals and mental training.
Deliberate, mindful exploration in MSM Sessions can help us to attune ourselves towards, as well as, discover more peak experiences!
Peak Experiences and MSM
Mention “Peak Experience” and it might conjure up thoughts of standing on the summit of a mountain, catching the sunrise and being awed by the majesty of nature. Certainly, that is a form of peak experience - but not the only one.
I’ve found that we are able to explore those feelings of euphoric transcendence a little closer to home too - within the universe of our minds! And, that the practice of Meditative Sensual Massage (MSM) helps attune ourselves to such peak experiences - facilitated by a partner / coach / trainer we trust, and can flow with.
In my years of MSM practice, peak experiences do occur with enough regularity that I believe we stand a good chance of being able to experience one (or many!), should we seek them out and are able to enter the right headspace condusive to them.
Of course, this doesn’t imply that all MSM sessions are peak experiences, but, that it is possible to experience them to varying degrees in a session. A lot of it depends on our headspace, the ability to active receive, as well as the energy exchange between giver and receiver. This can be definitely be developed and improved over time!
Reflect
Some questions to guide our reflection today - have we experienced such peak moments recently?
If Yes -
Let's take a minute to practice gratitude - to be thankful for such opportunities in life. If the experience was one that was shared with other(s), also express that gratitude to them, and brighten their day!
Take time to ponder - what made that experience special to you?
For your future better self - what are your takeaways for growth and personal development?
If No -
What are the tiny steps you can take to create conditions that increase your likelihood of encountering peak experiences?
They can be simple steps like setting aside time and space for meditation, learning to say ‘no’ to demands that distract or sap our energy, or keeping our bodies healthy and fit.
Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step - and you can do it!
Sharing is Caring!
It is my hope that all of us find our peak experiences in whatever forms they may take, big or small. As such, I intend to write and publish more about my attempts to explore peak experiences, as well as share some ‘recipies’ that simplify our approach towards crafting them.
I believe that with some guidance and effort, anyone can craft such experiences for sharing with others!
With regards to MSM, these can take many different forms (as MSM itself is a broad umbrella term that covers sensory exploration to its fullest extent), some of which are mentioned below:
‘Vanilla’ MSM - A standard meditative sensual massage as described here.
Sensual tub soaks & scrubdowns - An intense, lush, multi-sensory experience that begins or ends with a soak in the tub or shower.
Mindful explorations of our sense of taste & smell - Exploration and appreciation of good food and drink in conjunction w other session modifiers e.g. curated/guided topical conversations and practice of gratitude.
Mental introspection, discovery & plumbing the depths of our minds - Sensual dominance, exploration of concepts such as vulnerability / trust / dominance / submission while we push our body to its sensory limits.
And many more… stay tuned!
*** Please note these key aspects of exploring in a responsible manner:
(a) open, non-judgmental communication,
(b) clear understanding of boundaries, consent and preferences, as well as
(c) clear understanding of individual risks and responsibilities.
